Well I am kind of curious, you are for regulations, but not for a nanny state, so you have kind of put yourself in this nebulous state of stating something without actually saying anything.

But, to answer your question.

This country has turned into a nanny state where no one is responsible for his or her own behavior anymore. We have 40 hundred-gazillion laws to "protect" us from ourselves. I've worn a seatbelt since they were first installed in cars. I don't need a law telling me that I have to wear one. And, no offense, GL, I don't give a rats ass about people who don't.

I carry a cell phone, have yet to make an outgoing call, and answer only if driving conditions warrant safe usage. I don't need a law telling me that I'm not allowed to use one because I'm too f'ing stupid to know I'd be distracted.

The recent rash of laws requiring children to wear helmets on bicycles is absurd. Matter of fact, I'm surprised that someone hasn't mandated helmets, wrist and shin guards for toddlers. Learning to walk, they do fall down, and OMG, someone could get HURT.

We've morphed into a nation that thinks that no one should ever get hurt and everyone should live forever.

For me, it's a matter of personal choice and personal responsibility. Trav and I ride without helmets, except where mandated by law. If the folks who insure the bike want to charge us more, fine. If the health insurance company wants to charge us more, fine. It then becomes an economic decision that we get to make. Personal choice and personal responsibility.

It's just like the proposed smoking ban. If every single restaurant in Cincinnati goes smoke free, I'll adjust. Hell, make that Hamilton County. Nope, make it the whole state, I don't care. But let the business owners decide, not City Council. I said it before and I'll say it again. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE FACT THAT A RESTAURANT/BAR/BOWLING ALLEY ALLOWS SMOKING, TELL THEM WITH YOUR WALLET. Follow up with a letter informing them that they've lost your business and why. Enough of that, and I guarantee you places will go smoke free.
